Summer Momentum Drives Strong Fall

Summer Momentum Drives Strong Fall
Dean Kathy Farrell shared her excitement about the return of in-person events this fall at the College of Business. The 2021 Back to School Bash will be held on Friday, August 27, 3-4:30 p.m., for all Nebraska Business students, parents, alumni, faculty, staff, business partners and friends.

Though summer is often a time to recharge before the fall semester, all of us at the College of Business are looking forward to an active fall semester with our students back on campus, the return of in-person events and exciting new initiatives. I also want to celebrate some of our summer successes and share a few opportunities at Nebraska Business.

This summer, we partnered with Nebraska Extension to bring high school students to campus for a camp called Discover Talent in Startups, June 13-18. The entrepreneurial-minded high school students worked together to develop business plans and make "Shark Tank" style pitches for a final product or service during their week-long camp. They were also mentored by local entrepreneurs, engaged in hands-on activities and collaborated to solve problems and further develop their entrepreneurial skills.

We also collaborated with the Nebraska Alumni Association for the fourth annual Future Husker University, July 8-9. In addition to campus tours, lunch in a dining hall and a chance to stay overnight in a residence hall, Husker alumni and future Huskers, ages 7-13, explored college courses in business, engineering, journalism and mass communications, and more. Showing students the possibilities of college at an early age helps inspire them to set goals for their future and allows them to see and experience campus.

We've also been preparing for an exciting new initiative to help Husker student-athletes maximize their potential and capitalize on their Name, Image and Likeness (NIL). Joe Petsick, executive in residence and assistant professor of practice in management, worked with our Center for Entrepreneurship and Clifton Strengths Institute teams to develop a program that lends expertise in business, strengths-based education and entrepreneurship to help student-athletes identify, strengthen and activate NIL potential. NU Athletics recently introduced the new three-part initiative called #NILbraska, which provides tools to build a business around the athlete in a long-term investment approach. This is another example of how we can do big things together, especially when we collaborate with our partners across campus. I look forward to providing ongoing updates as we navigate opportunities opened up with this new legislation.

Recently, the College of Business Twitter account received the blue verified badge. To obtain this badge, Twitter examined the college’s website, social media, news articles and media mentions to ensure we provide quality, recent and relevant information, and we are recognized as a reliable source of information that helps contribute positively to discussions on the Twitter platform. Thank you to everyone who engages with us. For those ready to follow us, you can find us @NebraskaBiz and I'm @KathyFarrellUNL.

You are invited back to campus to join us for the following three events this fall:

  • Employer Partners Day - Thursday, August 5 | 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m.
The Business Career Center will kickoff campus recruiting and their 10th anniversary year by bringing together employers, faculty and staff for the annual Employer Partners Day. Attendance options include in-person (free), in-person with boxed lunch ($15) and virtually on Zoom (free).
  • Back to School Bash - Friday, August 27 | 3-4:30 p.m.
Celebrate the new school year with students, parents and alumni and enjoy music, free games, refreshments (while they last!) and giveaways. Many thanks to our event sponsor Sandhills Global for helping us celebrate another opportunity for students to start their next chapter of success.
  • Nebraska Business Alumni Pregame - Saturday, November 6 | three hours prior to kickoff

All Nebraska Business alumni are invited back to a pregame celebration during which we will share the great things happening at CoB. Alums will have an opportunity to re-connect while enjoying food and beverages before the Nebraska v. Ohio State football game. Check out the Alumni webpage for additional information.

There is much to celebrate at the College of Business. I hope you to see you this fall.
