Students Connect with Potential Employers at Meet the Firms

Students Connect with Potential Employers at Meet the Firms
Emily Van Der Bosch, president of Beta Alpha Psi, helped coordinate Meet the Firms.
Student leaders in Beta Alpha Psi joined forces with the School of Accountancy and the Business Career Center to organize and plan Meet the Firms, an annual career fair that prepares students at the University of NebraskaLincoln College of Business for their prospective careers. Professionals from more than 25 firms in public accounting, information systems, private industry and government agencies attended. Representatives networked with more than 300 students seeking internship and potential job placements.

“Firms hire earlier and earlier so it is important for the students to make connections,” said Jill Trucke, assistant professor of practice in accountancy. “Those students need to get their face out there with their résumé and build those relationships with potential employers.”

The first hour of Meet the Firms enabled freshmen and sophomores to casually talk to accounting professionals, make first connections and learn about opportunities for special programs and internships. Then, students who are pursuing employment opportunities in the near future networked with the employers, set up interviews and more.

Emily Van Der Bosch ’17, the president of Beta Alpha Psi, helped plan the event while pursuing post-baccalaureate coursework as she prepares to sit for the CPA exam. She believes the event helps sharpen networking skills.

“Everyone ends up doing interviews, so this is your first chance to get your foot in the door and meet the employers who are going to be recruiting you,” said Van Der Bosch. “You get more used to talking to employers you don’t know and telling them more about yourself as a professional.”

Meet the Firms continues to grow each year, from roughly 12 firms in 2012 to 27 this year. With the recruitment of accounting students starting earlier each year, many firms look to hire interns for this spring and summer now.

“Meet the Firms brings employers and students in the School of Accountancy together for a phenomenol opportunity,” said Matt DeLong ’15, a tax accountant at Lutz Accounting and Business Solutions. We leave this event with a pool of applicants for on-campus interviews. We hire a lot of students straight from the University of Nebraska.”

Open to accounting, finance and information systems students, Beta Alpha Psi includes students who take at least a 300 level or higher class in their area of study, have been enrolled at Nebraska for at least one semester and earned a cumulative GPA over 3.0. It provides opportunities for self-development, service and association among members and a sense of ethical, social and public responsibility.
