Start Your Story: Phoebe Lockhart

Phoebe Lockhart, a junior economics major at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Business Administration, was selected to participate in the 2016 Mount Vernon Leadership Fellowship program at the home of George Washington in Mount Vernon, Virginia. The Ogallala, Nebraska, native was one of 16 students from across the United States in the intensive leadership development program for nearly six-weeks this summer. The fellowship program is for incoming juniors who want to learn from George Washington’s leadership lessons, interact with leaders in the corporate, government and military sectors in the nation’s capital and make a difference in the world.
 
“I’m incredibly proud of Phoebe for being selected for the Mount Vernon Leadership Fellows Program,” said Erin Burnette, director of the CBA Honors Academy. “I’m excited to see how she is able to apply the lessons she learns from George Washington’s leadership to the rest of her time at UNL and use the connections she gains in D.C. to propel her future career goals.”

While living in Mount Vernon, and Washington, D.C., Lockhart and the rest of the cohort partook in behind-the-scenes tours and cultural excursions aligning with their daily curriculum. The academic program focused on skills that were crucial to Washington’s success as a statesman, entrepreneur and military leader: his character, leadership, vision and execution. The program was developed when the Fred W. Smith National Library for the Study of George Washington opened in 2013. Curt Viebranz, president of Mount Vernon, wanted to enable passionate student leaders to ability to study leadership and to help shape them into future innovators.
 
“This program is designed for college students who are leaders and influencers on their campuses,” said Viebranz. “They will take their experience at Mount Vernon back to their universities and put into practice when they enter the working world.”
 
This year the program attracted more than 200 applicants from 40 states. The 2016 class included students from a variety of academic programs including engineering, accounting and neuroscience, as well as history and political science.
 
At UNL, Lockhart is president of the College of Business Administration Honors Academy Council. Following the fellowship, she will studying abroad in England through the CBA-sponsored Nebraska at Oxford program in July and August. Lockhart also has aspirations of going to law school, having interned at the law office of R. Kevin O’Donnell, P.C., L.L.O. in Ogallala, and is a student board member of the YWCA Lincoln.
