Seven Ways To Help Business Students Succeed

Seven Ways To Help Business Students Succeed
Students can start developing their future success from day one at the College of Business by utilizing free resources to impact academic, career and personal achievement.

You don’t have to figure everything out by yourself at college. The College of Business at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln offers resources specifically for business students to expand their academic, career and personal growth for success during college and life after graduation. Students can meet with any of these seven types of coaches for free.

1. Academic Advisor via Business Advising and Student Engagement (BASE)
From your first day of class to graduation, the academic advisors in BASE are your resource for academic advising, opportunities to get involved in the college and enriching learning outside of class. Meeting with an advisor should be on your to-do list every semester. The advisors can ensure you stay on track for graduation if you regularly meet with them to discuss your plans, interests and goals. They also connect you with critical information about courses, programs, degree requirements, personal and professional development, major choices, student organizations and important resources. Schedule a video chat or phone appointment with an academic advisor through MyPlan.

2. Strengths Coach via the Clifton Strengths Institute
You succeed when you focus on building what you’re already strong at instead of what’s wrong. All first-year business students take the CliftonStrengths® assessment through the Investing in Strengths (BSAD 111) course and receive one-on-one coaching to develop your top natural talents for academic, personal and professional success. Trained student strengths coaches lead meetings and facilitate two individualized strengths coaching sessions with each student to help you recognize and maximize your potential for success in college and beyond. The institute also offers customized workshops for student organizations to stretch strengths, transform culture and unlock greater levels of performance and engagement.

3. Career Coach via the Business Career Center
Explore majors and careers, develop your résumé and cover letters, refine your LinkedIn profile, learn strategies for interviews, identify opportunities and negotiate job offers. The career coaches in the award-winning, innovative Business Career Center can help you each step of the process finding internships or a job. A different employer each weekday meets with students in Hawks Hall or via Zoom 10 a.m.-1 p.m. as an Employer in Residence. Access the Zoom meeting link.

The career coaches and trained peer career coaches currently meet with students virtually to help you develop confidence, professionalism and connections with the college’s strong alumni and employer network. Schedule your free appointment via MyPlan. To access drop-in hours Monday to Friday, 1-4 p.m., go to their website.

4. Tutoring via the Teaching and Learning Center
From day one, you can get free help with your business courses through the college’s Teaching and Learning Center. The center provides free tutoring and review sessions to all business students via Zoom in one-on-one or group session options. Schedule your appointment for an individual online tutoring session in MyPlan. See the full tutoring schedule and additional options to individualize your plan.

5. Money Coach via Money Management Services
Managing your personal finances as a student can be overwhelming. As a part of Big Red Resilience and Well-Being, Money Management Services can help you out with these financial issues. They offer guidance on a wide range of topics like building credit, managing debt and moving off campus. Access Money Coaching FAQs on the web, as well as a full list of topics.

6. Well-Being Coach via Big Red Resilience and Well-Being
Academics are important, but so are your mental health and overall well-being. Well-being coaches are student volunteers who can help you thrive and create the life you want to live, both now and in the future by focusing on the nine dimensions of well-being. A new option this semester is to “Walk with a Coach” – because in-office appointments are limited due to COVID-19, you can walk with your coach outside and socially distanced.

7. Let’s Talk via Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)
Drop in to informally discuss some of your concerns in a one-on-one, 20-minute session with a CAPS counselor. Not an emergency session or formal appointment, this informal session allows the counselor to help recommend a plan based on your individual situation and needs. Recommendations might include a follow-up traditional evaluation or formal counseling appointment. Offered virtually via Zoom this fall, Let’s Talk virtual hours are:

  • Mondays, 1-3 p.m.
  • Tuesdays, 2-3 p.m.
  • Wednesdays, 3-4 p.m.
  • Thursdays, 11 a.m.-12 p.m. and 2-3 p.m.
  • Fridays, 11 a.m.-12 p.m.

If you are in immediate crisis or experiencing significant distress during regular business hours (Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.), please call CAPS at 402-472-7450 and ask to schedule a Crisis Care Appointment. After hours, please call 402-472-7450 and Press 4 to speak to the on-call counselor. Always remember, if you are in imminent danger to yourself or others, please call 911. You are not alone.

EXTRA BONUS FOR A FEE:
Personal Training via Campus Recreation
If you’re looking to improve your physical health, Campus Recreation offers certified personal trainers to provide you with a personalized exercise program and individual support. The first step to begin personal training is to purchase a PT Intro Package from the Member Services Desk at either Campus Rec location. The PT Intro Package is $60 and includes an initial consultation and two 1-hour training sessions with your trainer. Your trainer can then determine your fitness level, create short- and long-term goals, as well as develop an individualized program for you. After completing the PT Intro Package, you can purchase 3, 5 or 10 sessions to continue your fitness training.

By taking advantage of all these resources available to you, you will succeed and make your academic experience matter as you prepare to lead the future of business.
