Graduating Huskers prepare to turn their tassels at the upcoming University of Nebraska–Lincoln commencement ceremonies, held Friday, December 17 at 3 p.m. for graduate students and Saturday, December 18 at 9 a.m. for undergraduate students, both in Pinnacle Bank Arena. One of the business students walking across the stage this semester, Josephine Sandoval, senior actuarial science major, remembers the bonds she made along the way.
“The best thing about being a Husker is our close-knit community. Graduating from Nebraska means building lifelong friendships,” said the Hanford, California, native.
Sandoval made an effort to be involved on several fronts across campus, including Gamma Iota Sigma honor society for those interested in insurance, risk management and actuarial science, the Panhellenic Executive Council, volunteering as a campus host, and serving as a member of the Honors Program Student Advisory Board. Her time spent in an executive role helped shape her leadership style moving forward into the professional world.
“My involvement within the Panhellenic Executive Council was an impactful and rewarding experience. As a leader, I was challenged, bonded with the other executive members, learned how a successful organization is run, gave back to our Greek community and learned to lead with empathy,” Sandoval said.
As she prepares to work remotely as a commercial lines underwriter for Nationwide Insurance, Sandoval looks forward to traveling and exploring new states and countries. Faculty at the college left her grateful for the parts they played in her journey at Nebraska.
“Thank you to all of the staff and professors in the Actuarial Science Program. I would not have made it this far without your mentoring and kindness. Also, thank you John Kalu Osiri for a wonderful experience in the International Business program,” she said.
This commencement will continue to honor returning graduates from the Class of 2020 and the Class of 2021 from May and August, who are invited back to walk in-person at the event. Since those students have already received their diplomas in the mail, those returning receive a diploma folder with a special message from alumni and Chancellor Ronnie Green.
Guests not able to join in person, can watch the commencement via livestream on the commencement website. For more information about the event or to watch the celebration, visit: https://commencement.unl.edu.
