Marketing Major Danielle Bakken Covers All the Bases for Husker Athletics

Senior marketing major Danielle Bakken has been a student intern with the University of Nebraska Athletic Marketing Department for the past three years. In her time with the department, she has been the lead intern for baseball, men’s basketball, and volleyball. She has also served as football sideline coordinator along with working with the men’s and women’s gymnastics programs. Furthermore, she has helped with women’s basketball, wrestling, softball and Get Rec’d in her time as a student intern.

Bakken has produced various athletic events while at Nebraska. Her work has entailed coordinating PA scripts, videoboard features and promotions. The main goal of producing a game is to make everything run seamlessly and on time. She has also helped the public address announcer write scripts for various sports. One of Bakken's greatest talents is her design ability. She has been crucial in designing many promotional materials put out by the Nebraska Athletic Department which include billboards, flyers, newspaper, magazine and program ads, web ads, table tents, ticket brochures and t-shirts.

Bakken has been instrumental in the development of many promotional theme nights and group nights to help stimulate ticket sales. She helped to create unique giveaways, which helped to increase attendance and ad to the game atmosphere, which is a critical part of intercollegiate sports marketing.

The past two years Bakken ran all aspects of the Jr. Red Zone. She created and distributed the Jr. Red Zone newsletter. The newsletter acted as a promotional item to increase membership and also was used to promote upcoming events at Nebraska Basketball. In addition to the newsletter, she coordinated the distribution of holiday break tickets to Jr. Red Zone members and took ticket orders from parents and family members. During the holiday break, Bakken also set up and ran the Jr. Red Zone party which allowed members to take pictures with the mascot and Nebraska cheerleaders as well as play with inflatables and interact with other kids.

Bakken has been given the opportunity to gain experience working at and promoting major events. She helped set up and run the pre-game football fan festival, Husker Nation Pavilion, where for two years she acted as the radio coordinator, coordinating radio breaks with the pre-game football radio show and the band; both of which are the center piece of Husker Nation Pavilion. An advantage of working at Nebraska is the opportunity of working at NCAA championship events. Bakken was able to help market, promote and run NCAA events such as the 2009 and 2010 NCAA Volleyball First and Second Rounds and the 2010 NCAA Wrestling Championships in Omaha.

Overall, Danielle Bakken has been able to gain a lot of real world experience in the field of sports marketing and has taken full advantage of it by working hard, making herself available to help, and being willing to learn.
