Kathy's Point: October 2018

Recently while walking to the Lied Center for Performing Arts to pick up my 25 years of service crystal vase, I fondly recalled my first fall on the University of Nebraska–Lincoln campus. Though looking forward to teaching finance, it was definitely a transition moving to Nebraska from Georgia, meeting new colleagues, learning how the university worked and of course, figuring out where to park, especially during inclement weather. However, I will continue to say that it was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

This fall, eight new faculty joined our college. With three new professors in accounting, three in supply chain management and analytics, one in finance and one in management, they are already making an impact in the classroom and through their research. Please take a minute and read about these important additions to our college in this edition of Inside Nebraska Business.

The ongoing work of many was recognized last month when Nebraska Business ranked No. 44 in the U.S. News and World Report for undergraduate business programs. Moving up one spot from last year, this was our third year ranked in the top 50. You can learn about the methodology for these rankings in the newsletter, but it’s our programs, centers and offices inside Hawks Hall and the people who create and deliver game changing efforts on a daily basis that strengthen our reputation outside of these walls. It’s our alumni who move throughout the world and are living examples of what is possible with a Nebraska degree and our business partners and friends who help make it all possible. It takes a village and ours includes each and every one of you in our Nebraska Business community.

I am saddened to share we recently lost a member of our community. Mark Pogue, executive director of the Clifton Strengths Institute and associate professor of practice in management, passed away September 5, 2018. Mark shared his passion for strengths every day with students, faculty, staff and the greater community. He helped identify their natural talents and spearheaded the integration of strengths-based sciences at the college. At our Hawks Hall Gala last fall, Jim Clifton said (and I am paraphrasing) if there was anyone who could embrace and continue the work of my father, Dr. Don Clifton, as wholeheartedly as he did, it was Mark Pogue. Mark enjoyed sharing his talents with others because he believed in what he did. Please keep his family, including wife, Jami and their two daughters, Paige and Reilly in your thoughts. Mark will live on in our memories as we continue the work he started.

For those of you who need another reason to come visit us in Hawks Hall, I hope you will join us for our Executive Insights panel discussion on Thursday, October 18, 4-5 p.m. Four alumni will be speaking including Matt Epp, partner at EY, Teresa Poggenpohl, senior managing director - marketing and communications, North America for Accenture, Laura Schulte, retired executive vice president for Wells Fargo, and Sue Wilkinson, senior vice president and chief financial officer for Ameritas. RSVP at https://business.unl.edu/executive-insights.
