Green Announces Duane Acklie Chair at CBA

Chancellor Ronnie Green of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln announced the establishment of the Duane Acklie Chair at the College of Business Administration to support the Clayton K. Yeutter Institute of International Trade and Finance. Dr. John Anderson, Baird Family Professor of Economics, believes the new chair puts CBA in position to be a leader in the field of international trade.

“The opportunity to hire a senior economist in international trade comes because of a generous gift in honor of Duane Acklie, the former CEO of Crete Carrier Corporation,” said Anderson. “The funding flows from a previous initiative at UNL running a two-year program in honor of Yeutter, combining the disciplines of economics, agriculture and law.”

Yeutter served as U.S. Secretary of Agriculture from 1989-91. Anderson sees the creation of the new chair fulfilling Yeutter’s vision to train students in the three disciplines.

“Clayton’s passion is trade negotiations,” he said. “Our previous program trained two dozen students in topics related to international trade. We gave them fellowships and brought in top speakers from around world to speak on trade agreements.”

Although the new institute is still evolving, Anderson sees its potential aligning with the previous work. The new chair offers the ability to provide strategic leadership.

“It gives CBA a faculty position to focus on international trade and finance. New business courses and an annual high-level conference give our students better access to global issues happening today. Yeutter is thoroughly convinced students need all three perspectives of business, law and agriculture, which will be an on-going aspect of the institute,” he said.

Initially, institute students will be master’s degree program students. In addition to the Duane Acklie Chair, Green announced the Michael Yanney Chair and Clayton Yeutter Chair for the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and the College of Law respectively.

Duane Acklie, who died on September 17, supported UNL in many ways, including providing student internships and jobs to graduates. He also helped fund a new addition to the College of Law and the new CBA building.
