Donde's Point: May 2012

This has been a great academic year. I want to quickly share with you some of the many things that have happened.

  • A few of us - including one of our architects – visited the Carlson School at the University of Minnesota as well as the University of Illinois to visit their new buildings. We learned a lot that is helping shape our vision of our new building. The architects should be delivering to us their report and renderings in a few days. This report will be the basis of what goes forward to the Board of Regents in September. Soon you will be able to see the renderings as well.
  • We have revised our undergraduate curriculum to include required Professional Enhancement courses that will help our  students be prepared for the job market.
  • Plans are underway to start a CBA Honors Program in the Fall of 2013. Dr. Donna Dudney is the Director of that program.
  • The Nebraska Coordinating Commission on Post-Secondary Education approved our request for a new major in Supply Chain Management.
  • Our MBA jumped 22 spots in the US News & World Report ranking to 28th – just ahead of the University of Iowa in the ranking of part-time MBA programs.
  • Our undergraduate students created their own CBA Ethics Code, and more than 1,000 CBA students have signed a pledge to live by this code. Dr. Janice Lawrence has been working with the students on the code, and they now sport t-shirts with the expression, “Looking Beyond the Bottom Line.”
  • Dr. Gordie Karels, our beloved department chair in finance, had a successful liver transplant and is recuperating well. He appeared in a segment on transplants on ABC's "Nightline" recently.
It has been a great year. I taught my first course since coming to Nebraska – an MBA course on negotiations. Our MBA students are fantastic, but I better turn my sights to grading their papers and turning in their grades.

Sincerely,
Donde Plowman
