Business Career Center Hosts Employers To Maximize Recruiting Efforts

Business Career Center Hosts Employers To Maximize Recruiting Efforts
Kidwell received the 2018 Employer of the Year Award.
The Business Career Center hosted the seventh annual Employer Partners Day at Howard L. Hawks Hall on May 18. More than 110 attendees learned about new University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Business initiatives to advance students’ career development and the college’s new online graduate programs in business analytics and finance to address growing employer demands from Dr. Rachel Larson, director of the Business Career Center, and Dr. Kathy Farrell, James Jr. and Susan Stuart Endowed Dean.

Culminating another year of collaboration with employer partners, Larson presented two awards which recognize one organization and one College of Business faculty or staff member who goes above and beyond their commitment to business students’ career development. Kidwell received the 2018 Employer of the Year Award.

“Kidwell is an outstanding employer partner because of the extensive involvement they have had with career-related activities on campus. From participating in the Professional Enhancement Program’s networking events and practice interviews, acting as an Employer in Residence to sharing insights at the Backpacks to Briefcases panel discussion, they formed relationships that doubled the number of interns and full-time hires to 20. According to their nomination, they believe that helping each of these students see beyond the classroom and realize their potential is a win-win for us all,” Larson said.

Dr. Richard DeFusco, professor and chair of the Department of Finance, received the 2018 Sue Vagts Faculty/Staff Partner of the Year Award. DeFusco was chosen for his efforts to enhance career development, education and opportunities to help students succeed.

“Richard has been an excellent collaborator with the Business Career Center this past year. He has been great to work with in regards to the Professional and Life Skills (BSAD 444) course and coordinating panel discussion events for which the large number of students enrolled can participate including Executive Insights, Financial Advising as a Career and Banking as a Career,” Larson said.

Employer Partners Day featured the keynote address, “The Future of Media Is Weirder Than You Think It Is,” by Matt Waite, professor of practice in journalism. He discussed how the screenifcation of people’s lives has just started and how colleges and employers will have to adapt to capture students' attention in the future.

Employer partners also chose to attend two of four breakout sessions. Topics included legal issues in internships, advanced LinkedIn training, developing internships and community building. The focus on internships was timely as the center announced that 90 percent of business students in the graduating class of 2017 reported completing an internship or career-related experience during their academic career.

Dr. Chris Timm, associate director of employer experience and outreach, said, “This Employer Partners Day was special because we got to welcome our employer partners to the new Howard L. Hawks Hall. It’s great to show them how this building improves our students’ experience, update them on the college and Business Career Center initiatives and provide a professional development opportunity to maximize their recruiting efforts.”
