Big Potential: Murphy Larson

Murphy Larson
Murphy Larson, a junior finance and marketing major, currently manages the Daily Drip student-run café at the UNL College of Business Administration. She also plays a major role in efforts to fund non-profit projects through the student organization Enactus (formerly known as Students in Free Enterprise, SIFE).

Larson's project is called the LisaMom Foundation. Part of the funds from the Daily Drip go to fund her project, as well as other Enactus student outreach projects.

“Making the Daily Drip more profitable is important to me because my project helps provide nannies to families that have moms with cancer,” Larson said. “That’s important to me because my mom passed away from cancer and so I had a nanny.”

In addition to making the Daily Drip more profitable, she also headed a fall online fundraising challenge against other Enactus groups. The LisaMom Foundation campaign came in first place, raising over $5,000 for the non-profit while competing against many universities including Big Ten colleagues at the University of Minnesota, the Ohio State University and Michigan State University.

“Murphy is a great example of one of our students that already has experience putting together an advisory board for a non-profit,” Dr. Sam Nelson, assistant director of the UNL Center for Entrepreneurship, said. “She led that during her sophomore year and it was phenomenal. Now she’s learning the art of fundraising and getting to lead a business. We’re lucky to have her because she does have so much experience in a short amount of time.”

Larson recommends that any UNL student that has a desire to help others consider joining Enactus.

“My freshman year I joined and I was kind of scared,” she said. “I didn’t really know what I was doing. Then things started to grow. I started the project that helps moms with cancer and it’s really cool that the Enactus team is so supportive. You can do whatever project you want as long as you have a passion for it.”
