YLSCM Group Tours Supply Chain Operations in Kansas and Missouri
Students toured Holladay Distillery where they learned about supply chain operations and distilling processes.
Members of the Young Leaders of Supply Chain Management (YLSCM) student organization at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Business enhanced their knowledge of the supply chain industry by touring four businesses in Kansas and Missouri. The two-day trip in March included visits to Holladay Distillery in Weston, Missouri; B/E Aerospace in Lenexa, Kansas; Fastenal Distribution Center in Edwardsville, Kansas; and Roasterie in Kansas City, Missouri.

Dr. Scott Swenseth, associate professor of supply chain management and YLSCM advisor, explained how experiencing real-world environments in the supply chain industry provides students with tangible examples of what they learn in the classroom.

“Seeing the flow of materials through a facility like Holladay Distillery who ages their products for several years before packaging and shipping sheds new light on some of the discussions we have in class,” Swenseth said. “It was exciting to see a variety of supply chain environments and the risks involved.”

At B/E Aerospace, students walked through assembly areas and focused on aircraft cabin interior product design and approval processes. They learned about receiving and distributing goods at Fastenal Distribution Center, and the air-roasting technique of coffee created to aid consumer demand at Roasterie.

Sarah Shewchuk, a junior supply chain management major from Bellevue, Nebraska, appreciated the alternative perspectives about the industry the tours provided. Already completing three different supply chain internships, she said participating in YLSCM trips and tours help narrow down her fields of interest.

“Supply chain is a very hands-on career – seeing what is happening on the floor enhances communication and understanding of the industry, which is key because the work is mostly behind-the-scenes,” Shewchuk said. “Having the opportunity to see supply chain operations firsthand allows me to see different aspects of the industry and learn what areas I am the most passionate about when it comes to finding a future job.”

Neal Winter, a junior supply chain management major from Norfolk, Nebraska, and president of YLSCM, strives for the club to find new and unique opportunities for members. He helps coordinate a variety of experiences on and off campus.

“YLSCM hosts many events throughout that year that provide students opportunities to increase their supply chain knowledge and interact with professionals in the industry. We are constantly evolving our events in order to continue to be a resource for students to explore careers in supply chain management,” Winter said.

Students who attended the trip include:
