UNL Finance Major Excels in Economics Competition

UNL finance major Joel Jantzen took a detour into economics last year and captured a first place trophy competing in the Phi Beta Lambda National Leadership Conference. Jantzen won the title in the Microeconomics category and also took second place in Macroeconomics. Jantzen credits much of his success to his experience at the College of Business Administration.

“The thing that helped me excel in the competition is that we covered everything that was on the exam in Dr. Carlos Asarta’s classes,” said Jantzen. “He prepared me well for the exam and was a really great professor.”

Before competing at the national competition Jantzen became involved with UNL’s chapter of Phi Beta Lambda.

“Through Phi Beta Lambda you first compete at the state level and take a multiple choice exam. The top qualifiers from the state competition then move on to the national leadership conference where you compete against people from across the country.”

Jantzen was first exposed to the business world participating in Future Business Leaders of America while attending Tri County high school in Nebraska. He enjoyed following the stock market and watching the trends over time from his hometown of Plymouth. Eventually, his natural enthusiasm for finance along with his academic focus paid off.

“I want to become a financial adviser and right now I’m working at Waddell and Reed financial advising. It started off as an internship and now I’ve been hired as an assistant. I do paper work, create financial plans, and work on investment plans for clients.”

Phi Beta Lambda is currently involved in getting ready to participate in this year’s Nebraska state competition later this spring. Contact Phi Beta Lambda to learn how you can get involved.
