A new Student Ethics Board at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Business Administration was formed to serve as a resource to their peers on ethical issues. Nine undergraduate students were selected, based on their responses to a sample dilemma, to offer advice to their fellow students on every day ethical dilemmas. The board will discuss submitted dilemmas and respond, relating suggestions to the CBA student-written ethics code, in a monthly ethics e-newsletter called Beyond the Bottom Line
“Many students may be uncomfortable asking professors, advisors or friends for ethical advice, especially if their dilemmas involve their friends and classes,” says Laura Wehrman, board membership chair and junior management major from Nelson, Neb. “I wanted to be a member of the Student Ethics Board because I want to encourage other students to remain ethical and remind them that doing the right thing does pay off in the end.”
Casey Magnus, board secretary and sophomore marketing and management major from Eagan, Minn., says, “So far we have discussed issues surrounding academic dishonesty, conflict within student organizations and using test files.”

The new board builds upon the CBA students’ commitment to ethics. More than 2,300 business students have taken the pledge to uphold the CBA ethics code. The student-written code was introduced to the CBA student body last year.
“This large number of signatures shows CBA students are dedicated to living with integrity, honesty, professionalism and respect and compassion, which are the pillars of the ethics code,” says Wehrman.
Students can submit their ethical questions or concerns by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org
or placing them into a new Ethics Box located in the first floor atrium outside of CBA 128. All communication remains anonymous.
