New Graduates Prepare to Start Something

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Business Administration graduated 135 seniors, master and doctoral students Saturday, August 15, at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Four of the graduates looked back at their time at CBA and forward to how they will Start Something after graduation.

Daniel Balette transferred to UNL from Community College of the Air Force. The Surprise, Arizona, native will attend the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota starting this fall, where he will work toward a master of accountancy with the goal of eventually becoming a certified public accountant. Balette said faculty such as Jean Riley-Schultz and Jina Morris gave him the confidence to succeed.
 
“The instruction at CBA is outstanding. My professors took an active role in my education and they really cared about my success,” he said. “Being a Husker is an experience that’s hard to explain but uniquely our own. Being a Husker opens doors.”

Meghan Haggerty, a marketing major from Glen Ellyn, Illinois, wrapped up a four-year career with the Nebraska volleyball team by winning the 2015-16 national championship in Omaha, Nebraska. She will play professional volleyball in Sweden after graduation.
 
“The biggest advantage I gained from CBA is becoming a better public speaker as well as organizing and executing projects,” she said. “Between the resources offered by the college and the student life complex for student athletes, you can always seek help when it’s needed.”

Edmund Tan
Edmund Tan came to CBA from Kajang, Malaysia, and graduated with a degree in actuarial science. He was president of the International Student Fellowship and vice president of the Nebraska University Student Malaysian Association. He plans to work in the U.S. before ultimately returning to Malaysia.
 
“If I had to give advice to incoming students, I would tell them to go out and meet new people,” he said. “You are at one of the greatest universities, and you should meet as many people as possible and get involved to get the best collegiate experience.”

Amy Schoch
Amy Schoch of Central City, Nebraska, graduated with a degree in marketing. She founded the UNL chapter of CMA EDU, which is the Country Music Association’s college outreach and development program. The goal of the program is to educate college students on career opportunities in the music and entertainment industries. She plans to pursue a career in the music industry in Nashville, Tennessee.
 
“I believe having a degree from CBA will set me apart as I start my career,” she said. “The best thing about being a Husker is the experience and the people. I will take the lessons I’ve learned from my professors with me as I start my career.”
