New Accounting Events Debuted in 2015

The School of Accountancy implemented a number of events in 2015 inviting students to be more engaged in the school, learn about the accounting profession outside of the classroom and prepare for their future. In the College of Business Administration at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, accounting majors and graduate students participated in Senior Night, Accounting Junior Days and a start of term social.

Last spring the school hosted Senior Night on April 23. Six young alumni panelists were featured and discussed topics about entering the work force in both public and private accounting. Nearly 60 senior undergraduate students and graduating Master of Professional Accountancy (MPA) students attended the event.

Nolan Ingebrigtson ’11, senior treasury analyst at Molex Incorporated and member of the School of Accountancy Junior Advisory Board, served as a panelist for the event.

“Participation in the panel provided a great opportunity to connect with the upcoming graduates of the UNL School of Accountancy,” Ingebrigtson said. “I enjoyed interacting with the students. They asked practical and thoughtful questions about academics, careers and general tips on how to transition life stages.”

While seniors prepare to enter the job market, junior accounting majors participate in internships and interact with recruiters and potential employers. To assist accounting students, the School of Accountancy implemented Accounting Junior Days. This event features three seminars covering topics on career opportunities, networking and guidance with résumé and social media content.

These new events were developed through the efforts of Dr. Aaron Crabtree, director of the School of Accountancy and associate professor of accountancy.

“Accounting recruiting used to begin senior year and then it moved to the spring of the junior year. Now it’s moved to the fall of the junior year, so it can be startling to students,” Crabtree said. “I hear a lot of students say they didn’t know this was coming up, so I wanted everyone in our junior level classes to come to these sessions to understand the power they have in the process.”

MPA students also enjoyed getting to know each other and their professors at the MPA student pizza party. Over 35 students, faculty and staff turned out in September for a pizza buffet at the Old Chicago restaurant in Lincoln’s historic Haymarket District.

“These events showcase how the School of Accountancy is working to develop a sense of community and meet the needs of our students. We want to provide them with important information and skills that will help them be successful in their future careers,” Crabtree said.
