Mary Fischer Awarded Office Professionals Association’s Silver Pen

Mary Fischer, office associate, was recently received the Floyd S. Oldt Silver Pen Award by the University of Nebraska Office Professionals Association (UNOPA) at the organization’s 43rd Annual UNOPA Bosses Luncheon and Floyd S. Oldt Awards Nov. 12. Fisher was recognized for her more than two years of dedicated service to the College of Business Administration Marketing Department at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.

“I have repeatedly witnessed Mary go above what was expected or required of her in order to assist the department, college and even the university as a whole,” said doctoral candidate Joseph Matthes, who was one of her nominators for the award.

The Floyd S. Oldt Silver Pen Award honors university staff members who have demonstrated superior performance and have made a significant contribution to the university community as an employee. Fischer created the “On the Road to Michigan State” program to promote employees to have more active lifestyles. In a three-week period, CBA employees tracked their walking distances with the goal of walking 729 miles – the distance between Lincoln, Neb., and East Lansing, Mich. – before the Michigan State football game. Employees recorded more than 1,500 miles, far exceeding the program’s goal. She also has played a crucial role on the team that coordinates the cross-disciplinary Human Trafficking Conference organized by UNL each year.

“Mary’s contributions clearly go beyond her efforts in our department, including actively supporting the walk to Michigan State and the Human Trafficking Conference. I am constantly impressed with her positive attitude and desire to continually engage in personal and professional development,” said Dr. Scott Friend, assistant professor of marketing.

UNOPA also recognized Ann Chalupa, office associate at the School of Accountancy in the College of Business Administration, who was nominated for the Floyd S. Oldt Outstanding Staff Award. This award recognizes distinguished service of UNL employees with at least five-years of service.
