Marketing and Music Majors Come Together in Harmony

Marketing and Music Majors Come Together in Harmony

Finding the ideal combination of majors, Connor Meuret chose to pursue degrees in vocal music and marketing. The Omaha, Nebraska native chose the University of Nebraska–Lincoln because of the competitive yet collaborative environment and respected reputations of both the Glenn Korff School of Music and the College of Business Administration. Meuret, a junior, believes the multiple opportunities on campus, such as an internship at the Lied Center for the Performing Arts, blends her creative talents and business acumen in ways that will prepare her for her future career.

“Music is like a language, it’s something that is a part of you. By adding marketing to my skill set, I’ll have a big advantage in my career. My dream has always been to move to New York City to work and audition for Broadway, but I wasn’t sure if music was the only path for me. Working in the theater is more than just being musically talented, and I know the value of a business degree from a Big Ten school. It can lead you pretty much anywhere, so it’s a perfect complement to vocal music,” Meuret said.

Meuret works as a development intern at the Lied Center. She plans to use the experiences and skills learned there in a career in the theater after graduation. Meuret credits her professors at CBA for helping her get the internship and preparing her to be successful.

“My internship with the Lied is a dream come true. I work closely with donors and am gaining experience in event planning, using a customer management system (CRM) and working in an office. Much of what I’ve learned in my classes, I’ve been able to apply to my internship. My professors have industry experience and are accessible, and the discussions both in and out of the classroom have real and relevant insight,” Meuret said.

Meuret also serves as the vice president of communications for the American Marketing Association Collegiate Chapter at Nebraska and is the co-music director for the Pitch Please acapella group at Nebraska. She believes these volunteer leadership positions add value to her experience at Nebraska.

“Sometimes I feel like I am drowning, but I love it. A double major, an internship in the theater, leadership roles on campus, and the network of contacts I am creating during all of this are amazing opportunities. I know my experiences are invaluable and will be great for my career. I couldn’t have done any of it without the support and encouragement of faculty at CBA," she said.
