Kiewit Representatives Encourage Students to Explore Career Possibilities

Andrew Wesely and Brian Seger are both University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Business Administration graduates who presented in classes at CBA and encouraged business students to think outside the box when considering a career path. Wesely and Seger work at Kiewit Construction and believe it is the kind of opportunity current business students are being prepared for at CBA.

“I majored in finance and economics, so when I graduated a year ago my first idea was to look at the insurance industry or banks for employment,” Wesely, who is from Lincoln, Neb., said. “I would have been put in charge of assets at probably less than a million dollars, whereas at Kiewit, I was put in charge of a $585 million dollar project as the business manager. I immediately began doing things like looking at pay raises for 500 people. Not many other jobs can let you say right out of college, ‘I'm in charge. This is my project.’”

Wesely, who moved to the Pittsburgh, Pa., area to work on his first big project, has already been promoted from business manager to project controller. He credits his participation in student activities for getting him a great job after college.

“I worked in student government as part of the Association of Students of the University of Nebraska (ASUN) on the committee of fee allocations. We had a $20 million dollar budget and were charged with allocating between the student organizations requesting funds. That was a tremendous experience.”

Seger, who is originally from Omaha, Neb., and is currently a deployment manager at Kiewit, credited his career path to the CBA classes.

“The CBA auditing class opened my eyes to my current profession. It taught me the value I can bring to a business, and it was an area of the profession I wasn’t fully aware of until I studied it.”

He sees job fulfillment as a key component to what current students should look for in a job and believes he has found it at Kiewit.

“The great thing about Kiewit is you can take pride in whatever is being built, because you’re making a contribution regardless of your position,” Seger said. “We emphasize air quality control systems, cleaning up polluting power plants and building amazing new facilities that will be around for a long time. We all play a role in it.”

To find out more about future career opportunities with business professionals, students are encouraged to attend CBA Career Information Day which will take place from 1:00-7:00 p.m., on October 24.
