Kaylan Maloley Discovers the Importance of Culture in Marketing Internship

While interning at Lincoln Industries in Lincoln, Nebraska this spring, Kaylan Maloley of Omaha, Nebraska determined the type of work atmosphere she wants to find after graduation. A senior at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Business Administration, Maloley graduates in August 2015 with a marketing major.

“Working at Lincoln Industries was a great experience, because they have a unique culture. They convey how much they care about their employees and want to make sure each person regardless of their position is enjoying the work they do,” Maloley said.

While interning, she discovered how understanding workplace culture can help students entering the job market choose a job that supports their career goals.

“I’ve never worked in a company where every employee raves about how much they love working there. This experience has helped me see what I want from the companies I work for in the future,” Maloley said.

She first learned about this internship opening during her marketing 426 course, services marketing, taught by Steve Welton, assistant professor of practice in marketing. Welton not only recommended her for the position, but also continued to meet with her throughout the internship.

“I am grateful for the support of the marketing faculty. Throughout my internship and through the classes I have taken, I have had the opportunity to meet one-on-one with professors, and learn from their knowledge and expertise. They have helped me find success in the work I have been involved in while at CBA,” Maloley said.

Maloley has also been involved with Jacht Ad Lab in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications where she worked with a team of students to provide advertising solutions for real clients. This provided her with valuable experience she applied to her internship as well.

“I enjoyed my internship, especially getting to redesign the company’s website, and being able to accomplish a wide variety of projects from writing articles to creating brochures and handouts. Overall, I feel even more prepared to graduate, enter the workforce and pursue my career in marketing,” Maloley said.
