International Business Summit Marks 30th Anniversary of Major at Nebraska
Dr. Kalu Osiri believes international business alumni are making a difference in companies and leadership around the world
In celebration of the 30th anniversary of the international business major at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, the College of Business plans to host its inaugural International Business Summit at Howard L. Hawks Hall, April 12-13. The summit will celebrate the milestone and offer students, faculty, alumni and employers the opportunity to connect with others who study or teach international business and professionals already doing business on a global scale.

“Thirty years of the international business major is something we are very proud of because it makes a difference for employers in the State of Nebraska and around the world. We also celebrate our current students, who enjoy a cutting-edge international business curriculum and programming, and 650 alumni who have graduated from Nebraska with degrees in international business. These alumni are making a difference in companies and leadership around the world,” said Dr. John Kalu Osiri, director of international business and associate professor of practice in management.

The International Business Summit enables attendees from across the nation to hear from students about their research, internships and experiences and engage in discussions about top issues in the industry. Sessions will include an international business career panel, Big Ten faculty symposium on international business education, student research and internship presentations and a panel discussion on the pros and cons of globalization. Attendees are also invited to attend the college’s Executive Insights panel discussion on Thursday, April 12, at 4 p.m. in Howard L. Hawks Hall. The free event will feature executives talking about their leadership and career experiences including retired Ahold USA CEO Allan Noddle, who also serves on the International Business Advisory Board at Nebraska Business.

The summit arrives at a pivotal time in the program’s history. The international business program is experiencing a milestone year, and a college record of 297 business majors and minors studied abroad in 2017 – an increase of 136 percent since 2014. Students can choose from more than 20 global immersion options around the globe. In 2018, the college’s first, and the university’s most popular faculty-led program, Nebraska at Oxford, also celebrates 30 years of sending students to study at the prestigious university in England for four weeks each summer.

“We are so proud to enable our students to experience the world up close. With the growth we’ve experienced, there is more momentum than ever in the college to have international experiences, both here in Lincoln and around the world. The most rewarding part is hearing from students who return and share how their time abroad in Japan or Spain or Uganda has given them a broader outlook on life,” said Amy Lester, international business program coordinator.

The International Business Summit is free for all those who register in advance, and an optional meet and greet lunch with employers is $5. Attendees can come and go as their schedules require. Learn more about the event and session times and register at: http://business.unl.edu/ibsummit.
