Inaugural Chapin Scholarships Announced by Center for Sales Excellence

The Center for Sales Excellence (CSE) at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Business Administration awarded the inaugural Richard W. Chapin Scholarships this fall. Aaron Docter, a senior management major from Firth, Nebraska, Colton Jones, a senior business administration major and marketing minor from Norfolk, Nebraska, and Cole Weers, a senior management and marketing major from Diller, Nebraska, received $2,000 each for the scholarships.

Scholarship recipients receive the awards based on performance excellence in the CSE program and participation in a sales internship program. Chapin ’46, instituted the scholarship program because he believes the sales profession is crucial to modern business.

“I spent my career in salesmanship and feel salespeople have been put in a category secondary to other business occupations,” said Chapin. “I’ve seen first-hand nothing could be further from the truth. Salespeople are at the top of my list.”

Each of the three scholarship awardees participated in internships this year. Docter became acquainted with the National Research Corporation (NRC) through the company’s support of the CSE program. He interned at NRC in Lincoln and learned first-hand the skills required to succeed in sales.

“The staff at NRC took time to teach me tips and tricks of the trade,” said Docter. “They mentored me along the way to sell more effectively, and I received great exposure to professional selling in a corporate environment. I am thankful for the scholarship and aspire to do the same later in my own life.”

Jones completed his internship at Sandhills Publishing in Lincoln. He believes the CSE program helped set him apart.

“My internship required me to prospect for new customers, effectively cold call and begin the customer relationship process to complete a sale – all skills required to be an efficient salesperson,” Jones said. “The techniques I learned in the CSE program I applied to my day-to-day tasks at Sandhills. I am currently wrapping up my last semester in the program and could not thank Mr. Chapin enough for the scholarship support.”

Weers interned at Cox Automotive Inc. in Atlanta the past two summers. He worked as both a sales and operations intern and a dealer sales intern during his two stints.

“The CSE program courses are the best classes I’ve taken in college,” said Weers. “Whatever you do in life you will always be trying to sell something. I appreciate Mr. Chapin for the scholarship and his support of the entire CSE program.”
