Former Business Learning Community Member Gives Back to Business Students

Steven Haywood works as a pricing manager at Union Pacific Railroad. Just a few years ago, he was a freshman living in the Business Learning Community (BLC) at UNL. Now he mentors students at the College of Business Administration to help them learn what it takes to make it in business.

Haywood participates annually in the UNL Career and Internship Fair. He talks with students about opportunities at Union Pacific and answers questions students have about their own career plans.

“I love coming back to talk with students,” Haywood said. “I tell them to be ready to be challenged. There are a lot of intelligent people at CBA that they can learn from.”
The pre-professional experience he received in college translated directly to his current job.

“It definitely plays a role in my job now as a marketing sales representative,” he said. “I’m able to meet new people and develop relationships very quickly now.”

Haywood provides clients with competitive pricing options to get them from point A to point B. Dr. D’vee Buss, assistant dean of undergraduate programs, sees his success translate to current students.

“Our Business Learning Community is designed to help students ‘make connections that count’ and it’s so exciting to see our students connect with Steve, particularly since I remember him the first day he was in the BLC as a freshmen,” Buss said. “It was a great learning moment to show that connections make a difference.”

Haywood confirmed the value of receiving a degree from CBA.

“I got a great education from the College of Business Administration,” he said. “I knew UNL had one of the strongest business programs in the Midwest, and being from Omaha, I wanted to go somewhere that was far enough away where I could be on my own, but close enough to get home. Nebraska was the right place for me.”

Haywood graduated from UNL in the spring of 2010 with honors and received a degree in business administration.
