Fine Arts Student Adds Business Minor to Resumé

Felicia Ramirez knew she would need more than artistic talent to stand out as a professional photographer. After transferring to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for the graphics program at the College of Fine Arts, she enrolled in the new business minor courses at the College of Business Administration.

“Everyone in my field has the creative ability, but if you have business skills you have an advantage. You understand marketing, accounting and managing your business on a day-to-day basis,” Ramirez, a senior from Kansas City, Mo., said.

Ramirez originally majored in architecture at the University of Arkansas before transferring to Nebraska. Combining a business minor with her fine arts degree, she believes is the best way to accomplish her dreams of owning her own photography business.

“I wanted to have a leg up on the competition and have sound business sense,” Ramirez said. “The program is tailored to non-business majors and the professors understand that so they cater the material to our needs.”

When Ramirez graduates next spring, she will already have a portfolio ready to go.

“I’m starting to build a clientele now while I’m still in school. I don’t want to start from scratch when I graduate and I want open my own photography studio as soon as possible.”
