Employer Partners Day Boosts Relationships Between Corporations and CBA

More than 100 individuals representing nearly 70 businesses attended the Employer Partners Day at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Business Administration, May 14. The event showcased new initiatives happening at the college and strengthened relationships between corporations and CBA.

“Those attending the event doubled from last year,” said Jeannine Berge, an assistant director/career coach in the Career Services at CBA office. “We met a lot of new people we hadn’t worked with before. They brought great energy to the event.”

Rachel Larson, also an assistant director/career coach at CBA, saw diversity of employers as a key component to making the event successful.

“We had companies in finance, health care, e-commerce, agriculture and many other fields so it was a good mix of employers,” Larson said. “We also saw a lot more presidents and senior vice-presidents this year in addition to the normal corporate recruiters. That created a greater diversity of thinking when we shared ideas about how to move forward.”

The event provided information to employers about the demographics of current CBA students to help educate companies on student strengths and also get feedback from employers about what qualities they look for in students. Several employers were interested in making connections with first year business students.

“We have a new program called First Year Friendly,” Berge explained. “It gives employers a chance to talk to first year students who can then begin exploring their career options early on in college. We are also integrating a new professional enhancement program this fall which will be a mandatory part of the student experience at CBA.”

Three break-out sessions focused on international students, MBA students and business students with an entrepreneurial focus.

“Employers had expressed an interest in connecting with these particular groups, and we had great attendance in each session,” Larson said. “The employers that attended the diverse student session were able to meet with five international students that each had a unique story to tell regarding their experiences at CBA.”

The Employer Partners Day ended with a luncheon and dessert reception for the attendees and CBA faculty and staff.
Two new career coaches will be joining the Career Services at CBA office in June. The additional staff members will allow CBA to partner with even more employers from Nebraska and across the country.
