CBA Marks Halfway Point of Construction with Celebration

Faculty and staff from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Business Administration recognized the halfway mark of new building construction with a “Celebrating 400 Days of Construction” picnic on the East Memorial Stadium Plaza.

Dr. Donde Plowman, James Jr. and Susan Stuart Dean of the College of Business Administration, toured the building site earlier in the day and shared her enthusiasm.

“My heart was racing like never before when I saw the new developments happening inside the building site,” Plowman said. “Just taking the tour you begin to feel differently about yourself, and I believe everyone at the college is going to feel that when they experience the new environment. This is a transformational project.”

Rik Barrera, assistant dean and chief operating officer at CBA, said building construction has progressed as planned but the best is yet to come.

“The current phase is very exciting,” said Barrera. “From now until September, we’ll continue seeing the arrival and installation of very large and heavy exterior stone pieces which will give the building its primary look and feel.”

Barrera shared the limestone pre-cast rock has a tone and texture that complements other buildings on the UNL campus and serves as a great “bookend” to Memorial Mall with Memorial Stadium on the other end. The sand colored stone accentuates the darker blue panes of glass which will make up the cube-shaped structure on the west side of the building.

“As the weather has warmed, we are now seeing the exterior glass go up. It’s really taking shape, and I see more of our CBA personnel walking past the site all the time admiring our new home,” he said.

Recent developments have also included the pouring of cement for the building floors, the café, student classrooms and the grand staircase on both the north and south ends.

“In April, our two main auditoriums took shape as the Hausmann Construction team created the different base levels to form the rooms,” said Barrera. “I’m getting calls and questions from people who walk or drive by the site and want to know more.”

The $84 million, 240,000-square-foot CBA building is the largest academic building project in recent history at UNL and funding for the project has come exclusively from private donations.
