CBA Honors Academy Team Excels at Leadership Challenge

A team of University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Business Administration Honors Academy students competed at the Leadership Challenge Event (LCE), at Washburn University in Topeka, Kan., April 3-4. The CBA Honors Academy team won the McGivern, Inc. Award for Team Communication in the college division.

Erin Burnette, assistant director of the CBA Honors Academy, said, “Our team was the only one in the competition made up entirely of first-year college students. The LCE only gives out three awards in each division. I’m incredibly thrilled about their performance. They all felt like this was a valuable experience.”

Members of the CBA Honors Academy team included:
  • Stetson Heirigs, Aberdeen, S.D., freshman marketing major
  • Caitlin Kunz, Stewart, Neb., freshman management major
  • Alexander Lahargoue, Overland Park, Kan., freshman marketing major
  • Jared Maguire, Norfolk, Neb., freshman business administration major
  • Daniel Woodworth, Papillion, Neb., freshman finance and economics major
The competition is a unique opportunity that simulates the real-world process of leadership through a full-day, live simulation. Teams compete to overcome obstacles and confront challenges to ultimately navigate the scenario and demonstrate their leadership knowledge and execution. This year’s simulation was set in a fictional county that was hit by a major flash flood. Students assumed various leadership roles in the community and worked together to develop multiple plans while simultaneously meeting with actors who played community members. Their day culminated in a final presentation that required them to defend their actions and decisions in front of a live panel of judges.

The College of Business Administration Honors Academy is a four-year, cohort-based, enhanced business curriculum for high-ability students who have the potential and desire to become the next generation of business leaders.
